Stedelijk Museum

The most important museum of contemporary art and design is located in the immediate vicinity of the Van Gogh Museum. The collection dates back to the Municipal Museum, which was founded in 1895 as a museum of urban history for the estate of an antique dealer.

The house was initially managed in this sense. Later, a successive outsourcing of the historical branch and concentration on art and design were undertaken. Since the seventies, the museum established itself as a center of contemporary and modern art. In addition to representatives of classical modernism, such as Picasso, Cézanne, Kandinsky and Malevich, there are works by German expressionists, pop art, video art, art brute and contemporary art on display. Permanent and temporary exhibitions on relevant themes complement each other.
