Van Gogh Museum

The film "Loving Vincent" enchanted the world. Modernity is inconceivable without his images. His biography is exemplary for the inner conflict of the individual. Many books and films were inspired by him. The artist took his own life at the age of thirty-seven. He left behind more than 850 paintings and about 1000 drawings.

During his lifetime, van Gogh hardly sold anything. It was only after his death that the prices of his works soared and soon achieved constant highs on the art market.

The world's largest collection of his works is housed in the Van Gogh Museum on Museumplein, which only opened in 1973 after great difficulties. The modern building is based on designs by Gerrit Rietveld and was executed by van Dillen and van Tricht. The supplementary buildings were designed by Kisho Kurokawa. Hardly imaginable today, many museums refused to exhibit loans of van Gogh's works.

On display are the famous "Sunflowers", "The Potato Eaters", "Self Portrait as a Painter", "The Bedroom in Arles", "The Sower", etc..

Theo van Gogh's brother was an art dealer and had started a collection of contemporary painters. Among them were works by Gauguin, Monet, Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet and other impressionists and representatives of modern painting. This was continuously expanded with foundation funds. Today the museum can present a comprehensive overview of 19th century painting, including works by Munch, Seurat, Courbet, Millet and Jongkind.
