Feskekörkan

Gothenburg's fish and seafood market hall

Gothenburg's "Fish Church" is one of Gothenburg's most distinctive buildings and one of the city's landmarks. The sacred-looking building from 1874 houses the largest fish market on the Swedish west coast.

Market hall for fresh fish

The name "Feskekörkan" means "fish church" in the Gothenburg dialect (in Swedish actually fiskekyrkan) .Here the people of Gothenburg "pay homage" to freshly caught fish and shellfish.

Nowhere are the delicacies of the sea fresher than in the restaurants of this market hall. Many locals also pick up food packages here to take home or for a picnic in the countryside or by the water. The building was built in 1874 to a design by the city architect Gegerfelt and actually looks like a traditional church building.

For its time, the construction of the huge hall was groundbreaking, with no load-bearing columns or partitions. In former times, the fish auction also took place here, but since the year 1910 it was moved to the harbour.

Those who do not necessarily want to eat fish should rather visit the Saluhallen, the market hall located at the Kungstorget, where there are delicacies from all over the world.

Very good fish restaurants

In addition to the market stalls on the ground floor, Feskekörka also has two fish restaurants. The Gabriel restaurant on the upper floor offers, among other things, a seafood buffet that is highly recommended. [/vc_column_text] [/vc_column][/vc_row]
