Vasa Church

Vasakyrkan

The neighbouring Vasa Park with the mighty headquarters of Gothenburg University gave this church its name. Located on the southern outskirts of the city, it was built in the neo-Romantic style and consecrated in 1919.

As the architect Yngve Rasmussen was given as much freedom as possible in designing the Vasa Church, he made some excursions into the Art Nouveau style. Almost one thousand people find place in this big church. About five thousand square metres of granite were brought from Bohuslän in western Sweden and from the quarries on the banks of the Gullmarsfjord. This red granite proved to be particularly resistant due to its hardness and was formed around 920 million years ago in the early days of the earth's history.

The interior of the church is characterised by the murals from the workshop of the Swedish painter and graphic artist Albert Eldh, who was famous for his ability to decorate churches with delicate colours. In the Vasa Church of Gothenburg he created the Assumption of Christ. The organ dates from 1909 and has been repeatedly renovated over the years. This is one of the reasons why concerts are regularly held in the beautiful church.
