Marina Lilla Bommen

A good starting point for a walking tour of Gothenburg is the marina Lilla Bommen (German "Kleiner Schlagbaum") on the river Göta Älv, which is located near the central station north of the old town.

In summer, you not only have a beautiful view of dozens of yachts at anchor, but you can also explore Gothenburg from the water with the small passenger ferry Älvsnabben (part of the public transport system).

The sailing ship Barken Viking

A popular photo motif at the harbour is the sailing ship Viking(barken viking), the largest windjammer ever built in Scandinavia. The former sail training ship has been moored here since 1993 and is used as a hotel, restaurant and conference centre.

Opera House and Viewing Platform

To the west of Lilla Bommen is the famous Gothenburg Opera House. On the east side is another Gothenburg landmark, the striking red and white striped office tower, also officially called Lilla Bommen (but usually called läppstiftet = "the lipstick" by Gothenburgers). On the 23rd floor of the 86-high building is the Utkiken viewing pulpit, from which you have a fantastic view over the city and the harbour.
